Starting a traditional Desktop (via noVNC) on Carina On-Premise

Please follow these instructions to access a traditional Desktop interface via Carina On-Premise.

  1. Make sure that you are connected to the full-tunnel Stanford VPN,
  2. Open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox preferred) and connect to the shared Carina On-Premise compute environment by entering the following: www.onprem.carina.stanford.edu.  
  3. If this is the first time you're accessing these resources, you will be asked to authenticate with your Stanford email: <your-sunet>@stanford.edu and approve a duo-push notification. Replace <pi-sunet> by your sunet ID - do not use your alias
  4. After a few seconds, you will see a JupyterHub environment that displays a menu allowing you to start a Desktop via a program called noVNC. The icon for that program is shown below with the letter "D":  

5. Upon clicking on "D", a new browser opens with a virtual desktop. Please keep in mind that the underlying filesystem containing your code and data will be the same across JupyterHub and noVNC. 

6. Open the applications of your choice as you would normally do on your own local Desktop:
